Tonight after Maggie’s performance in Swan Lake we will come home for a cup of apple cider and lighting of the first candle of Advent. Here is what we will be doing adapted from my home church’s Advent celebration.
This week we look at God’s promise to send a Savior.
Light the First Candle as Everyone Says Together: John 8:12 - Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness.
Someone Asks: Why do we light a candle of promise?
Answer: This candle reminds us of the promise of the prophets that a Messiah would come, bringing peace and love to the world.
Read Aloud: Isaiah 9:2,6
Prayer: Dear God, we often walk in darkness. We become caught up in our work, and our families, and our concern for making it through each day. We forget about the promise, the light, and the hope you have given us. We need the light of peace and love to shine in our lives. Help us to remember your promise as we prepare our lives and our homes to receive the One who said, “I am the light of the world” Amen
Close with the following: I trust in God and I am not afraid; I praise Him for what He has promised. (Psalm 56:4)
Discussion Questions: What is a promise? Why is it important to be people of our word? How can we trust in God’s promises? When has someone followed through on a promise to you? Is it hard to keep promises?
