Spring Cleaning Your Desk: File It Away

by Mindy Lockard on March 28, 2012

A moment of truth here folks. The truth is, if you called me Gomer, Gomer Pyle…

I will answer.

Because you see I have a tendency to pile. In fact if you name it, I can pile it. It will be organized, neat and tidy… but in a pile none the less.

However, over the past year I’ve tackled the piles {and urge to do so} through a great filing system created by a fantastic former intern, Mason!

Organizational systems can be tricky. No one system works for everyone. However, I have found a few organizational aspects to be universal and they are to have the right supplies on hand and stiff cocktail in the other.

Totally kidding about the cocktail, after all we really shouldn’t ever drink and file. The two work against each other.

Anyway back to the supplies:
Label Maker — locked (new batteries) and loaded (enough tape)
Files — I love to have beautiful folders as it keeps me interested
Empty Recycle Bin — if you haven’t touched it in a year and you don’t need it for legal or financial reasons, file in in the recycling bin!
Good Friend — to keep you entertained and purging as necessary

Once you’ve gathered all of the necessary supplies, you need to figure out your organizational style. Take time to identify the systems that best fit your style. Just because alphabetical works for Martha doesn’t mean it will work for you. So, be willing to go a little rogue and find a system that you will be able to access your information. Last year when we created my system (not alphabetical, but based on clients and projects I work with most) Mason built in permission to be random…

A file that makes me smile everytime I thumb by it. It is also the folder where I file away thoughts and whims. It holds my creative brainstorms and is the place I go when I need to be inspired.
