Gracious Giveaway Day One: A set of Crane & Co. 50 engraved calling cards — check them out here!

A Little Trip Down Etiquette’s Memory Lane… Calling cards have emerged as a hot trend, but calling cards as a social networking tool have been around since their first appearance in early Chinese culture. Known as ming tzhu (name card) or pai theigh (visiting card), these wooden cards bore a person’s name. Sometime around the fifth or sixth dynasty, the wood was replaced by paper, and the cards began including name, title, and town. During the Ming Dynasty, calling cards evolved into a status symbol. Scholars carried red cards and commoners exchanged white cards. This concept of using calling cards to display status was later adopted by Victorians, who not surprisingly had a slew of strict rules relating to their usage.

Why Use Them?  Today, the calling card is less a formality and more a fantastic and sophisticated social tool. The true beauty of calling cards, aside from their stylish appearance, is that we have all encountered a time when we could have used them. Rather than fumbling for your cell phone or a scrap of paper or napkin to scribble down contact information, imagine withdrawing a sleek card from your wallet or handbag containing the necessary information.

To enter today’s Gracious Giveaway… we simply want to know that you were here. So just leave a “hello” in the comment section below!  We will be drawing the winner’s name next week!

And, if you have a moment, pop by and say “hello” to Peter at the Crane Insider too. I just know you’ll  love what he has to say over there. Oh, and did I mention the eye candy?  Lot’s of it!

Found you through Second City Soiree. Love the website — I keep thinking about finding something like this for my daughter who made friends at camps & classes during the summer, but had no way to stay in contact with her new friends. Next summer, she will have her own calling cards.

Helen Ellis 10.22.10 at 12:33 pm

Oh my goodness, I love calling cards. I’m a 39 year-old married woman living in Manhattan who refuses to own a cell phone. Bring on the calling cards. I can slip them in my pocket and escape the angst of vibration or a “Too Legit to Quit” ringtone.
Brava!
Helen Ellis
