Love Family. Love Tradition.

by Mindy Lockard on July 27, 2009

To know me, is to know what my family means to me. Every summer I take the girls for a week to savor time with my most favorite people on the planet, my family. This dreamy week includes morning walks to coffee at my favorite French bakery, strolls along the lake, wine poolside with my mother, dinners on the patio, hours of cousins playing in the garden, catching up with old friends and late night chats with siblings and their spouses. As tradition goes, at the end of the week Ty joins us in Portland for a few events hosted by my sister’s family: Friday night Poker Party and Saturday RFI: Rice Family Invitational 3 on 3 basketball tournament.

The Rice Family is my sister’s husband’s family — who also happens to be friends from childhood. This basketball tournament takes place in my sister’s brother-in-law and sister-in-law’s backyard. The tournament tradition started well before we had children, with a few post college basketball players and their new wives or girlfriends enjoying a low key day of competition in the sunshine with a cup of beer and some bean dip. Ten years later the Saturday basketball tournament tradition continues with an increased number of items on the menu and children in tow.

This past Saturday we enjoyed another year of this fun family tradition.  I started the day by mixing a few morning cocktails…

The competition  always gets kicked-off with the drawing of the names ceremony — a time when the more seasoned players (a.k.a. thirty-somethings) cross their fingers and pray to the basketball gods for two solid picks!

and let’s not forget going over a few rules. You know me, I love a good green guideline.

As the day went on we cheered on our daddy and uncles…

Thank you Rice family for another fabulous day of tradition, food, and fun.  They say if at the end of a day if a child isn’t dirty they haven’t had enough fun.  If this is true, it was the best day of Elle and Maggie’s life!

What is your favorite family tradition…do tell!

Mindy, we loving having you and the family. Thank you for the sweet words, now lets rest…enjoy the memory of a day of fun, food and great conversations along with a few stories of missed shots and in a few days we begin planning for next year.
