Today was a big day in the life of Miss Elle Lockard because she cut her hair to give to Locks of Love. For some, a haircut is no biggy, for Elle… well do you remember Sampson from the bible? Yeah, her hair was her things. She loved it, enjoyed every single inch of it and giving it to a child in need – although she thought it was a great idea – was the ultimate sacrifice.
If you are thinking of letting your child do this and can stand the months of hair snarls that could house a small animal; I highly recommend it. It was one of the best lessons for Elle in putting someone else’s needs ahead of her own. It’s easy to give a toy here and there, but when it comes to actually giving of yourself, that’s another story.
Here’s how it went down…
We packed light for the salon: pocketbook, 2 rubber bands, camera (to entertain Maggie), and tissue.
Took a few last pictures for memory sake…
and that’s why we called her Rapunzel!
On the way to the salon we said a prayer for the child who will one day wear Elle’s hair.
For locks of love the hair must be 10 inches long and put a double rubber band…
straight cut across snip,
All smiles until we left the salon and she folded into a puddle of tears and my heart sank.
A pep talk from Dad and a glimspe at the new cut in a headband turned her spirits around!
We packaged up the hair and wrote a quick note:
Dear Locks of Love,
I hope you like my hair. I hope you have fun with it!
and sent if off all smiles and a great big high-five from daddy, whaoo from Maggie, and a tears of pride from mom (I tear up easily).
Elle, I am so proud of what you did for another human being today — even though it was very hard and uncomfortable for you!
I love you.
