Take to the Table Tuesday: Bloody Mary Bar

by Mindy Lockard on September 9, 2010

There was a tween slumber party game that gave me nightmares… and daymares for that matter. It was the game where one would lock him or herself in a dark bathroom, spin around three times in front of the mirror and say “her” name.

A young naive Mindy Knight, fell for this tale… a young Mindy Knight didn’t visit a dark restroom for the greater part of her tween years.

Thank goodness Mindy Knight is all grown up, because “she” will be joining us today to model a little accessorie we whipped–or should I say swizzled–up for her. Ms Mary that is. The accessory? Bacon Swizzle Sticks! And they are GOOD!

From tailgates to Sunday brunch, these sticks are the swaazizzle. I think that’s a word… no? Yes?

What you need?

  • Bacon (we love to pick up a couple of pounds from our Butcher)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 kosher salt
  • 1 tsp worcestershire
  • 1 tsp white pepper
  • 1/2 tsp cajun seasoning (optional)

How to make them…

Twist the bacon tight…

Combine the remaining ingredients in a bowl and mix with a fork. Sprinkle over the bacon and bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes.

While they are baking repeat the sprinkle and turn, until both sides are cooked.

When the bacon sticks are very golden and crispy remove them from the pan and cool on a paper towel. Don’t be afraid to put them back in the oven if you think they need more time. Be sure to watch closely, beause there is a difference in crispy and char.

I love these as a Bloody Mary swizzle stick, but the Mr. who isn’t a huge fan of Ms. Mary loves them as a breakfast side.

Note: we make them ahead and store in an air-tight containter in the refrigerator.
